THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
WATCHMEN AND GATEKEEPERS
In Nehemiah 7, we learn that the wall was completed. After the completion of the building of the wall, people were placed in strategic positions on it (v. 3). They also had porters (v. 45, KJV). This word porter is shoer, and it means to act as a gatekeeper.
The question came to my mind: What is the difference between a gatekeeper and a watchman? The first thing that I would like to note is that a person cannot be on the wall and effectively control the traffic of the gates at the same time. They are two completely different functions. To illustrate this truth, letâs look at the issue of airport security in America. Security guards are stationed at the gates of the front part of the terminal. Only passengers or employees of the airport can go through these gates. The gates are checkpoints to the areas of the airport with higher security.
Two things are generally checked at these points: credentials and contraband. The guards at these gates are not usually armed, but they have the authority to allow entrance. There are also armed officials, strategically stationed around the airport, who are generally out of sight. They are secret agents and U.S. marshals who are heavily armed, yet they wander around unnoticed. They have the true firepower behind the scenes. You never know who these people are until trouble comes.
When a problem arises, they jump out of nowhere to deal with the situation. The gatekeeper is the person on terminal security, and the watchman is the U.S. marshal behind the scenes. Everyone knows who the gatekeepers of cities are, but watchmen on the walls hold the firepower behind the scenes. Though gatekeepers walk in great authority, the true power of intercession, that of the watchman, is behind the scenes.
Gatekeepers control the flow of traffic in a city; they allow the right ones to enter. On the other hand, the watchman on the wall has a strong discernment for the enemy. The more experienced the watchman is, the further away he or she can detect the approach of the enemy. It is very difficult to check for the right ones and to keep your eyes on the enemy off in the distance at the same time. Though all intercessors must have a defensive and offensive disposition, gatekeepers and watchmen maintain different general functions of intercession.
In 1 Chronicles 9 they ordained and set into office two hundred twelve gatekeepers (v. 22). They also ordained four chief gatekeepers who were watchmen and gatekeepers (v. 26). This proves that one person can do both functions, but it is a rare position. In this position they had two assignments:
1. They had the responsibility of manning the watch.
2. They opened the house every morning (keeping the gates).
Recently I had what I know to be a prophetic dream. I was fighting witches with a powerful sword. I was cutting them up with this sword. They were outside of the house at first, but later penetrated the house and got inside.
